The Fading Blue Light
I don't often mow the yard. I have more important, more productive things to do. But the grass had gotten out of hand, so I set my work aside and mowed.
The kids ran ahead of me, picking up sticks and toys hidden in the grass. When the yard was done, I threw the football with the boys until it was too dark to be safe, while Denver made it her mission to tear apart a fallen limb.
Standing in the yard, I realized something. I had been living under the illusion that my work was providing a better life for my children. More things, more wealth, more. But there in the blue dusk, I saw that to my children, wealth looked like me, with them, in the fading light.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD.
Psalm 127:2–3
