I Got The Last Hit In.
Growing up, we had a little game in our family called “I got the last hit in.”
There were eight kids in our family, and never enough room in the car. We sat hip to hip, which is not the ideal arrangement for children with strong opinions and quick tempers. Before long, somebody would say something, somebody would answer, and then somebody would reach across the seat and make the point with a smack.
Back and forth it went until one of my parents noticed.
“Stop hitting.”
That did not stop the game. Then came the real warning: “The next person to hit gets disciplined.”
That was when we knew the game had to end. The winner would lean over to the loser and whisper, “I got the last hit in.”
The reason this story came to mind this week is that I recognize the same game being played all across our culture.
From marriages to the highest levels of political office, the desire to get the final blow seems to have settled in everywhere.
Understandable, I suppose.
But I do find myself wondering who will be willing to let it go.
Bless you,
Pastor
