Always Something To Pray About.
Last night we were praying as a family, and I asked one of my children what they wanted to pray about. They responded, “Nothing.”
I don’t like to force my children to pray. I don’t want them to grow up hating prayer. For the same reason, I don’t demand they attend every extracurricular church activity. I want them to cherish church and remember Sunday mornings filled with joy.
But last night I took a different approach. I looked at that child and said, “Let’s do better than that.” They looked at me.
We always have something to pray about. Maybe we don’t have something we want to ask God for—and that’s okay. We can always praise God for who He is. We can always thank Him for something. We can ask for forgiveness. We always have something to pray about, and I encourage you to find it.
It’s easy to pray when we are desperate. Think of a painful relationship—after we’ve tried everything to reconcile, we often go to God as a last-ditch effort for intervention.
But do we ever thank God for the healthy relationships we already have?
It’s easy to see God as the fixer and not the giver.
I once heard a man say, “The key to success is gratitude,” referring to God. Gratitude may not be the key to success, but it does remind us where every good thing comes from. Gratitude puts things in proper order and reminds us that we are not alone and not sustaining ourselves.
If you don’t feel like you have anything to pray about, you do. And sometimes prayer helps us realize just how much we have to pray about.
Bless you,
Pastor
